Originating from China, this ancient breed was once a favorite companion of Chinese emperors. With its luxurious long coat, flat face, and large dark eyes, the Pekingese has a regal look, often making them seem more like little lions than dogs. Despite their small size, they possess a bold and independent temperament, often thinking they are much larger than they are.

  • The Pekingese is a small, compact dog with a distinctive, lion-like appearance. Typically weighing between 7 to 14 pounds and standing about 6 to 9 inches tall, this breed has a sturdy and muscular build despite its small stature. They have a broad, flat face (known as a "brachycephalic" face), with a short snout and large, expressive dark eyes.
  • Their most striking feature is their luxurious double coat, which is long, flowing, and abundant, requiring regular grooming. The coat comes in a variety of colors, including red, black, fawn, and sable, and may have a mane-like ruff around the neck. Their tail is another defining feature, typically carried high and curled over their back.
  • The Pekingese is known for its dignified and independent temperament. Despite their small size, they have a bold, confident attitude and can be quite stubborn at times. 
  • Pekingese tend to have a calm demeanor and are usually not very energetic, making them suited for apartment living or homes with limited space. They enjoy lounging and cuddling with their family but may also display a regal air, often preferring to be treated with respect.
